KORU8 Exhibition: Finnish Forest Museum & Oulu Art Museum

Artist showcase of contemporary wooden jewellery pieces from around the world.

KORU8 took place from the 4th to the 8th June in 2024. The main purpose of the event is to present widely international contemporary jewellery and bring together the artists, lecturers, researchers and people with interest in contemporary jewellery to take part in exhibition, seminar and workshops!

The KORU event was established in 2003 in Lappeenranta, Finland. The event is a triennial and as such, it is the most long-standing contemporary jewellery event in Finland. KORU1 was held in 2003, KORU8 will be held in 2024.

The events numbered 1-4 were organized by Saimaa University of Applied Sciences together with Art museums in Lappeenranta and Imatra. Also, The South East Art Council was involved. In 2015 The Finnish Art Jewellery Association took over the event and has been the organizer since KORU5.

Since 1995, the show has included students from a growing number of international schools and academies, providing a fascinating insight into the ideas and preoccupations that motivate young artists from around the world. Alongside the exhibition, we host a one-day symposium during which participating graduates have the opportunity to engage with their contemporaries and present and talk about their work, their inspirations, their aspirations, and the challenges that face them as they embark on a life outside of the supportive environment of a school.

The most visual part of the event is the international jewellery exhibition. Over the years KORU exhibitions have been shown in South Karelia Museum, Lappeenranta Art Museum, Imatra Art Museum, Vaasa City Art Gallery, Kuopio Art Museum, Artspace Laikku in Tampere and Suvilahti in Helsinki.

In every past event there has also been a seminar along with workshops which both bring people together to discuss and work within the topics of contemporary jewelry.

Graduate showcase of students from around the world.

Held every year from August to October, the Marzee International Graduate Show is undoubtedly the highlight of Gallerie Marzee's calendar and with it we aim to endorse the work of a new generation of jewellery artists; to increase their exposure to the wider public and to encourage a dialogue between makers and their wearers.

The first Marzee Graduate Show took place in 1986 and since then has grown from a modest exhibition, showing work by a small number of students from the Dutch schools – the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, the Academie Beeldende Kunsten in Maastricht and ArtEz Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Arnhem – to an event unparalleled in size and scope.

Every year we award the Marzee Graduate Prize to a number of the most promising graduates in recognition of their outstanding work. The prizewinners are offered a week-long  residency at the Ravary estate in Belgium and the work created is then exhibited during the following year’s Graduate Show.
